How accurate are these conversions?
They are the conventional equivalences the trade uses, and no law obliges any brand to follow them. Vanity sizing has moved the numbers steadily downwards for decades, so a US 8 from the nineties and a US 8 today are cut for different bodies. Use the label to narrow the search and the measurements to decide, and if the shop publishes a chart in centimetres, that chart beats every conversion here.
How should I measure myself?
Over underwear, with a tape held level and snug but not pulled tight. Bust or chest at the fullest point with your arms down, waist at the natural crease when you bend sideways, hips at the widest part of the seat. Have someone else hold the tape if you can, because reaching round pulls your shoulders forward and adds a couple of centimetres.
Why is the Japanese shoe size a plain number like 26.5?
Because it is the length of your foot in centimetres, which makes it the only one of the four systems that describes something you can check with a ruler. Measure your foot standing, at the end of the day, wearing the sock you intend to use, and add a few millimetres of room.
Why do EU shoe sizes have no proper half sizes?
Because they are counted in Paris points of two-thirds of a centimetre, while UK and US sizes step in barleycorns of a third of an inch. The two ladders do not line up, so any conversion between them carries a rounding error of a few millimetres. That is why an EU 42 can feel between a UK 8 and a UK 8.5 rather than exactly at one.
My bust and hips give different sizes. Which do I take?
For a top or a dress, the larger measurement, because a seam can be taken in and cannot be let out beyond its allowance. For trousers, fit the hips and alter the waist. This is a fitting question rather than a conversion one, and no chart can settle it — the tool shows all three measurements side by side so you can see how far apart they are.
