Cooking Measurement Converter

Cups to grams, with the ingredient taken into account.

Cooking Measurement Converter translates between cups, tablespoons, millilitres, grams and ounces — and because a cup of flour and a cup of sugar weigh very different amounts, it converts by ingredient using standard densities. It also scales a whole recipe and converts oven temperatures, all in your browser.

Questions about Cooking Measurement Converter

Why does the ingredient matter?
Because cups measure volume and grams measure mass. A US cup of water is 236 g, of granulated sugar about 200 g, of all-purpose flour about 120 g, and of packed brown sugar about 220 g. Converting cups to grams without knowing the ingredient is guesswork.
Whose cup is it?
A US customary cup is 236.6 ml, a US legal cup 240 ml, a metric cup 250 ml and an Australian tablespoon is 20 ml rather than 15. All are selectable, because recipes rarely say which they meant.
How accurate is flour by volume?
Not very — how you scoop changes the weight by up to 20%, which is why serious baking recipes give grams. Use this to get close, and weigh when the recipe depends on it.
How do I convert an oven temperature to a gas mark?
Switch to the oven tab and enter the temperature in °C or °F, and the nearest gas mark is shown with both scales. Gas marks are coarse — mark 4 is 180 °C, mark 5 is 190 °C — so the tool gives the closest one rather than pretending to a precision the oven does not have.
Can it double or halve a whole recipe?
Yes. Paste the ingredient list one line per item and give a multiplier, and the leading quantity on each line is scaled, fractions included. It does not rewrite units, so half of "1 cup" reads as 0.5 cup rather than 8 tablespoons, and only a number at the start of a line is touched, so "Bake at 180 °C for 20 minutes" is left as it stands.
Is Cooking Measurement Converter really free, with no limits?
Yes. There is no account, no daily cap, no file-size tier and no watermark, because there is no server cost to recover. The site is funded by clearly disclosed partner recommendations on the Partners page, never by metering the tools.
Are my files or text uploaded when I use Cooking Measurement Converter?
No. Everything is processed by JavaScript running in your browser, on your device. You can verify it: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and use the tool. You will see no request carrying your data — because there is nowhere for it to go.
