Why does it work where formatting is not allowed?
Because these are different characters, not styled text. The mathematical alphanumeric block in Unicode contains bold and italic letterforms as distinct code points, so they survive in any plain-text field.
Will screen readers cope?
Poorly, and this is the real cost. A screen reader may read "πππ₯π₯π¨" letter by letter or skip it. Use fancy text sparingly and never for information someone needs.
Why do some styles show as boxes?
The device lacks a font covering that Unicode range. Bold and italic are widely supported; the more exotic blocks are patchy on older Android and Windows.
Will the styles survive when I paste them?
Usually, because they are ordinary characters rather than formatting. Some platforms normalise text in usernames and search fields and will convert them back to plain letters, and a few reject non-standard characters outright.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Copying works from mobile Safari and Chrome, and the styled text pastes into any app that takes text. Whether each style renders is decided by the fonts on the device you paste into, not by this page.
