How does it handle rounding?
The whole calculation runs in whole pennies rather than decimals, and the leftover pennies go to whoever the division cut by the most. A bill of 100 between three cannot be split equally, so two people pay 33.33 and one pays 33.34. It says so, rather than printing 33.33 three times and being a penny short.
Should the tip be worked out before or after tax?
That is a judgement call, so there is a switch for it. Tipping on the post-tax total means tipping on the tax as well, which costs a little more, and most printed suggestions on receipts do it that way. The tool shows the difference so the choice is a deliberate one.
How are tax and tip shared in the itemised mode?
In proportion to what each person consumed, so someone who had a starter and half the wine carries more of the service charge than someone who had soup. That is fairer than a head count in most cases, but it is not the only defensible answer: an evenly shared tip is a reasonable thing to agree instead.
Can two people share one item?
Yes. Tick everyone who had it and the price is divided between them in whole pennies, using the same largest-remainder rule so nothing is lost. Bread for the table, a bottle of wine or a shared side is exactly what the itemised mode is for.
Are the names and amounts stored?
Only in your own browser. The split runs in the page with no network request, and your last list is kept in local storage so it is not lost on a reload. Nobody else can see it and nothing is uploaded.
