Where do the voices come from?
From your operating system, via the Web Speech API. macOS, Windows, Android and iOS all ship a set, and you can install more in your system settings — they will appear in the list here.
Can I download the audio as a file?
Not from the standard speech API, which speaks directly to your audio output without exposing the samples. Some system voices are cloud-backed by the OS itself; the voice list marks which are local when the browser reports it.
Which languages work?
Whatever your system has installed. The voice list shows the language of each, and the tool picks a sensible default for the text you paste.
Is this better than a paid AI voice service?
No, and it is not trying to be. Cloud services produce more natural voices and hand you an audio file. This gives you the voices your device already has, with no account, no cost and no text leaving the machine.
How much text can it read in one go?
The whole box is sent as a single utterance, and some browsers cut long ones off after a few thousand characters. If playback stops early, split the text into shorter sections and play them one after another. Pause and Resume work throughout.
Is Text to Speech really free, with no limits?
Yes. There is no account, no daily cap, no file-size tier and no watermark, because there is no server cost to recover. The site is funded by clearly disclosed partner recommendations on the Partners page, never by metering the tools.
Are my files or text uploaded when I use Text to Speech?
No. Everything is processed by JavaScript running in your browser, on your device. You can verify it: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and use the tool. You will see no request carrying your data — because there is nowhere for it to go.
