Does the grout gap really change the answer?
Yes, and not in the direction most people expect. A tile occupies its own size plus one joint, so 600 mm tiles with a 3 mm gap repeat every 603 mm and a floor takes slightly fewer of them, not more. Over a large area that is a tile or two either way, which matters when the order lands close to a box boundary.
How much wastage should I allow?
Ten per cent is the usual allowance for a straight or brick layout in a rectangular room. Fifteen is closer for a diagonal, because every perimeter tile becomes a triangle whose offcut faces the wrong way and cannot be used at the other end. Herringbone needs about twenty. Add more again for a room with a lot of pipes, alcoves or curves.
Can it handle an L-shaped room?
Not in one pass, and it says so rather than guessing. Split the room into rectangles, work each one out and add the tiles together, then apply the wastage to the total. Working from a single overall area for an awkward shape understates the cuts, because the extra corners are exactly where the offcuts stop being reusable.
Why does the tile shop quote more tiles than this?
Shops usually round each room up to whole boxes and add their own allowance on top, and some quote by pack coverage rather than by tile count. Neither is wrong. The figures here are the arithmetic without the padding, so you can see how much of a quote is tiles and how much is margin for error.
Should I order a spare box?
Almost always. Tiles are fired in batches and dyed in runs, so two boxes of the same reference bought a year apart can be visibly different side by side. A spare box from the original batch is the only reliable way to replace a cracked tile later, and the tool can add one to the order for you.

Are my files or text uploaded when I use Tile Calculator?
