Questions about Circle Crop Image
Why must the output be PNG?
Because the area outside the circle has to be transparent, and JPEG has no alpha channel. Exporting to JPEG would put a solid rectangle back around your circle.
Can I make a rounded square instead?
Yes, the corner radius is adjustable from a square all the way to a full circle, including the squircle shape used by mobile app icons.
What size should an avatar be?
400x400 covers almost every platform; 512x512 is safer for anything that may also be used as an app icon. Smaller sources will look soft when the platform scales them up.
Will the circle still line up once I upload it somewhere?
Most platforms apply a circular mask of their own, so a pre-cropped circle inside a square PNG matches as long as the subject is centred. Where a service shows the full square instead, the transparent corners take on whatever background that page uses.
Does it work with a rectangular photo?
Yes. A portrait or landscape photo is fitted inside the circular frame and you drag and zoom to choose which part shows — nothing is stretched to fit. Start from at least 400 pixels on the short side, or the crop will look soft once a platform scales it up.
Is Circle Crop Image really free, with no limits?
Yes. There is no account, no daily cap, no file-size tier and no watermark, because there is no server cost to recover. The site is funded by clearly disclosed partner recommendations on the Partners page, never by metering the tools.
Are my files or text uploaded when I use Circle Crop Image?
No. Everything is processed by JavaScript running in your browser, on your device. You can verify it: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and use the tool. You will see no request carrying your data — because there is nowhere for it to go.
