Open the table of typical wattages and add the closest match; each row fills in a starting figure and a typical daily run time. The real number is usually printed on a plate on the back or underneath, or in the manual, and it is worth checking for anything that runs long hours.

Because the plate rating is the maximum draw, not the average. Anything with a thermostat, whether a fridge, a freezer, a heater or an air conditioner, cycles its compressor or element on and off, and over a day it may draw full power for a quarter of the time or less. Using the plate rating overstates those several times over.

The fridge, usually, and it surprises people. A 3 kW kettle boiled five times a day uses about 0.75 kWh; a fridge averaging 40 W around the clock uses 0.96. Hours beat watts, which is also why five devices left on standby at 5 W come to 0.6 kWh a day, more than the television gets through in an evening.

A fixed daily amount your supplier charges for the connection, whether or not you use any electricity. It is separate from the unit rate, and switching things off does not reduce it. The field is optional, and the result shows what share of the bill it accounts for.
