How do I get a proper Instagram 3x3 grid?
Choose the 3x3 preset. It first crops your image to a 1:1 ratio so each tile is square, then cuts it, then numbers tiles so you can upload them in reverse order — which is how the grid appears correctly on a profile.
What if the dimensions do not divide evenly?
Remainder pixels are distributed across the edge tiles, so nothing is lost and no tile ends up one pixel wide. You can also crop to an exact multiple first.
Does splitting lose quality?
No. Tiles are copied pixel-for-pixel; only the re-encode step, if you output JPEG, is lossy.
How large should each tile be for Instagram?
At least 1080 pixels a side, which means a source of about 3240 pixels square for a 3x3 grid. Smaller sources split perfectly well, but Instagram re-compresses whatever it receives and a soft tile comes out worse than it went in.
Can I split a very tall screenshot or a PDF page?
A tall screenshot, yes — set one column and as many rows as you need and it cuts even horizontal strips. A PDF is not an image, so run the page through PDF to JPG first and split the picture that comes out.
