Questions about Barcode Generator
Which symbology do I need?
EAN-13 for retail products outside North America, UPC-A inside it, Code 128 for internal logistics and shipping labels since it encodes any ASCII, and Code 39 for older industrial systems that require it.
Can I invent my own EAN number?
You can generate the image, but a real retail barcode requires a GS1-issued company prefix. A made-up number may collide with a real product, and retailers will reject it. Use Code 128 for internal use instead.
Why does the quiet zone matter?
Scanners need clear space either side of the bars to find the symbol — at least ten times the narrow bar width for EAN. Barcodes that fail to scan in the wild have usually been cropped too tightly.
Will these scan if I print them on a home printer?
Usually, if you print from the SVG at 300 dpi or better. Barcodes fail when a low-resolution printer resamples the bars unevenly, so avoid scaling a PNG up, and keep the quiet zone intact when you drop the image into a label template.
Does it make QR codes or Data Matrix codes?
No. This tool covers linear symbologies only — EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, Code 128, Code 39 and ITF-14. For QR codes use the QR Code Generator; Data Matrix is not produced here at all, though the QR Code Reader can decode it.
Is Barcode Generator really free, with no limits?
Yes. There is no account, no daily cap, no file-size tier and no watermark, because there is no server cost to recover. The site is funded by clearly disclosed partner recommendations on the Partners page, never by metering the tools.
Are my files or text uploaded when I use Barcode Generator?
No. Everything is processed by JavaScript running in your browser, on your device. You can verify it: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and use the tool. You will see no request carrying your data — because there is nowhere for it to go.
