Where does my camera feed go?
Into the page and nowhere else. Frames are analysed in your browser and discarded; nothing is recorded or transmitted. Camera permission is requested only on this page.
Why show me the URL instead of opening it?
Because a QR code is an opaque link, and malicious codes stuck over legitimate ones — on parking meters, restaurant tables, posters — are a real and growing scam. Seeing the domain before you tap is the entire defence.
Can it read barcodes too?
Where the browser supports it, yes: EAN, UPC, Code 128, Code 39, ITF, PDF417 and Data Matrix are decoded alongside QR.
Does it work on an iPhone or an Android phone?
Yes. The camera scanner runs in Safari and Chrome on mobile and asks for camera permission the first time. The built-in Camera app reads codes as well, but it offers to open the link with far less warning than this page gives you.
Can it decode a blurry or damaged code?
Often, within limits. QR codes carry between 7% and 30% redundancy depending on the error correction chosen when they were made, so a scuffed or partly covered code frequently still reads. Heavy glare, a steep angle, or a code smaller than roughly 100 pixels across in the image will defeat it.
Is QR Code Reader really free, with no limits?
Yes. There is no account, no daily cap, no file-size tier and no watermark, because there is no server cost to recover. The site is funded by clearly disclosed partner recommendations on the Partners page, never by metering the tools.
Are my files or text uploaded when I use QR Code Reader?
No. Everything is processed by JavaScript running in your browser, on your device. You can verify it: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and use the tool. You will see no request carrying your data — because there is nowhere for it to go.
