Is anything recorded?
No. The stream is displayed and discarded frame by frame. There is no capture button, nothing is written to disk, and no data is sent anywhere — you can confirm it in the network tab.
My camera shows a black screen. What now?
Almost always another application is holding it — video call apps commonly keep the device open in the background. Close them and reload. On macOS and Windows also check that the browser has camera permission at the operating-system level.
Why is the resolution lower than my camera supports?
Browsers negotiate a stream, and default to a modest resolution. The tool requests the highest available and reports what it actually got, which is the number your meeting software will get too.
Can I test the camera on a phone?
Yes. Mobile browsers expose both the front and rear cameras, and the device list lets you switch between them. Grant camera permission when prompted; on iOS this works in Safari and in Chrome, which uses the same underlying engine.
Why does it need camera permission at all?
A browser cannot show a preview without opening the camera, and opening the camera always requires your consent. The permission applies to this page in this browser only, can be revoked in site settings at any moment, and nothing is recorded while it is granted.
Is Webcam Test really free, with no limits?
Yes. There is no account, no daily cap, no file-size tier and no watermark, because there is no server cost to recover. The site is funded by clearly disclosed partner recommendations on the Partners page, never by metering the tools.
Are my files or text uploaded when I use Webcam Test?
No. Everything is processed by JavaScript running in your browser, on your device. You can verify it: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and use the tool. You will see no request carrying your data — because there is nowhere for it to go.
