Break-Even Calculator

How many units cover your fixed costs.

Break-Even Calculator works out how many units you must sell to cover fixed costs, from the price and the variable cost per unit. It gives the contribution margin, the break-even point in units and revenue, and how many more units a target profit needs, with a chart drawn on canvas. Calculated in your browser.

Questions about Break-Even Calculator

What counts as a fixed cost?
Anything you pay whether you sell one unit or a thousand: rent, salaries, software, insurance. Variable costs are the ones that scale with each sale — materials, packaging, shipping, payment fees. Putting a cost in the wrong bucket is what makes a break-even figure wrong.
What is the contribution margin?
What each sale contributes towards the fixed costs, which is the price minus the variable cost. Divide fixed costs by it and you have the number of units to break even. If it is zero or negative, no volume will ever get you there, and the tool says so plainly.
Does it work for a service business?
Yes, with a unit being an hour, a project or a subscription month. The arithmetic is identical; the interpretation changes. For a subscription, the break-even figure is customers rather than units, and churn is the thing this calculation does not model.
Why does the chart matter?
Because the gap between the lines is what people misjudge. Two products can break even at the same volume but be very different businesses: a thin margin at high volume is far more fragile to a small price change than a thick margin at low volume, and the shape shows it.
Are the figures uploaded?
No. Cost structure is among the most sensitive numbers a business has. Everything stays in the tab.
Is Break-Even Calculator really free, with no limits?
Yes. There is no account, no daily cap, no file-size tier and no watermark, because there is no server cost to recover. The site is funded by clearly disclosed partner recommendations on the Partners page, never by metering the tools.
Are my files or text uploaded when I use Break-Even Calculator?
No. Everything is processed by JavaScript running in your browser, on your device. You can verify it: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and use the tool. You will see no request carrying your data — because there is nowhere for it to go.
