Margin & Markup Calculator
Convert between margin and markup, with the formulas.
Margin and Markup Calculator takes any two of cost, price, margin and markup and works out the rest, showing the formula each time. There is a target-margin mode for pricing and a multi-row mode for a price list. It explains why a 50% markup is only a 33% margin. Calculated locally.

Questions about Margin & Markup Calculator
What is the difference between margin and markup?
Both compare profit to something, but to different things. Markup is profit as a percentage of what it cost you; margin is profit as a percentage of what you sold it for. Buy at 100 and sell at 150 and you have a 50% markup and a 33.3% margin — the same transaction, two numbers.
Why does confusing them lose money?
Because applying a markup when you meant a margin under-prices you. Someone told to hit a 40% margin who applies a 40% markup sells at 140 instead of 166.67, and gives away nearly 27 on every unit. It is one of the most expensive arithmetic mistakes in small business.
Can I work out the price for a target margin?
Yes, that is the mode most people need. Enter your cost and the margin you want and it gives the price, rather than making you rearrange the formula. The formula is shown so you can check it or reuse it in a spreadsheet.
Does it account for payment fees?
There is a field for a percentage fee, since card and platform fees come off the sale price and quietly reduce a margin you thought you had. A 3% fee on a 10% margin takes almost a third of the profit.
Are my costs and prices sent anywhere?
No. Pricing is commercially sensitive and stays in the tab. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored between visits.
Is Margin & Markup Calculator really free, with no limits?
Yes. There is no account, no daily cap, no file-size tier and no watermark, because there is no server cost to recover. The site is funded by clearly disclosed partner recommendations on the Partners page, never by metering the tools.
Are my files or text uploaded when I use Margin & Markup Calculator?
No. Everything is processed by JavaScript running in your browser, on your device. You can verify it: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and use the tool. You will see no request carrying your data — because there is nowhere for it to go.
