VAT Calculator
Add or remove VAT, GST or sales tax from an amount.
VAT Calculator adds tax to a net amount or strips it out of a gross one, showing net, tax and gross together with the arithmetic. Country rates are available as presets, you can work backwards from the tax figure alone, and a multi-line mode handles a list of amounts. Calculated in your browser.

Questions about VAT Calculator
How do I take VAT off a gross price?
You divide rather than subtract, which is where most people go wrong. At 20%, the net is the gross divided by 1.2, not the gross minus 20%. Taking 20% off a gross figure removes too much: £120 gross is £100 net, but subtracting 20% gives £96.
Why are the country presets only a starting point?
Rates change, and many countries have reduced rates for food, books, transport, energy or accommodation alongside the standard one. The presets cover standard rates at the time of writing; check the current rate for your category with your tax authority before invoicing.
Can it work out the rate from an invoice?
Yes. Enter the tax amount alongside the net or gross and the rate is derived. That is the quickest way to check whether an invoice you received applied the rate it claims to have applied.
Is this VAT advice?
No. It is arithmetic. Whether you should charge VAT at all, which rate applies, how reverse charge works across borders and what you can reclaim are questions for your accountant or tax authority. Getting the sum right is the easy part.
Does rounding match what an invoice should show?
Amounts are rounded to two decimals at the point they are displayed rather than accumulated, so totals do not drift. Note that some jurisdictions require tax to be calculated per line and others on the invoice total, and the two can differ by a penny.
Is VAT Calculator really free, with no limits?
Yes. There is no account, no daily cap, no file-size tier and no watermark, because there is no server cost to recover. The site is funded by clearly disclosed partner recommendations on the Partners page, never by metering the tools.
Are my files or text uploaded when I use VAT Calculator?
No. Everything is processed by JavaScript running in your browser, on your device. You can verify it: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and use the tool. You will see no request carrying your data — because there is nowhere for it to go.
