Why does payroll want decimals at all?
Because pay is a multiplication, and 7:45 is not a number you can multiply by a rate. Decimal hours make the arithmetic ordinary. The mistake people make is reading 7:45 as 7.45 rather than 7.75, which underpays by eighteen minutes every time it happens.
Which input formats does it accept?
The common ones: 7:45, 7h45, 7.75, and bare digits like 745. Mixed formats in a single pasted column are handled row by row, since a column copied out of several places rarely uses one convention.
Why round to 6, 15 or 30 minutes?
Those are the standard payroll increments. Six minutes is a tenth of an hour and is common in professional services billing; fifteen minutes is the usual employment default. Rounding to a tenth is why legal and consulting time is billed the way it is.
Does rounding lose me money?
Over a single entry it can go either way. Rounding to nearest is roughly neutral over many entries; rounding down consistently is not, and in several jurisdictions rounding that only ever favours the employer is unlawful. The direction is a setting because your rules, not this tool, decide it.
