What does a PDF typically reveal about me?
Usually your name or your organisation's, from the account that created the document; the exact application and version that produced it; and precise creation and modification timestamps including your time zone. Sometimes the original file path.
Does stripping metadata also remove the XMP block?
Yes. Both the classic document information dictionary and the XMP packet are cleared, because leaving one behind is the most common mistake — many tools clear only the first.
Does this remove hidden text or comments?
No. Metadata is separate from page content. Annotations, comments and text hidden behind an image are page-level objects; this tool does not touch them.
Can I set a custom producer string?
Yes, every field is free text, including Producer and Creator. Leaving them blank is generally the more private choice.
Does stripping metadata make a document anonymous?
It removes the obvious identifiers, which is most of what leaks in practice. It does not touch the page itself, so a letterhead, a signature block, an image carrying its own EXIF or a font subset unique to your machine can still say something. Treat it as one step, not a guarantee.
Can I read the metadata without changing the file?
Yes. Opening a PDF lists every field it carries, and nothing is written until you save, so the tool doubles as a viewer. Close the tab without saving and the file on disk is exactly as it was.
Is PDF Metadata Editor really free, with no limits?
Yes. There is no account, no daily cap, no file-size tier and no watermark, because there is no server cost to recover. The site is funded by clearly disclosed partner recommendations on the Partners page, never by metering the tools.
Are my files or text uploaded when I use PDF Metadata Editor?
No. Everything is processed by JavaScript running in your browser, on your device. You can verify it: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and use the tool. You will see no request carrying your data — because there is nowhere for it to go.
