Reaction Time Test

Measure your reaction time over several rounds.

Reaction Time Test measures the gap between the colour change and your press, over as many rounds as you choose, and reports the mean, median, best and spread. Timing is taken from the frame the change was painted in. It runs entirely in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.

Questions about Reaction Time Test

What counts as a good reaction time?
Simple visual reaction in a healthy adult usually lands between 200 and 280 milliseconds on a test like this one. Anything under about 150 almost always means you anticipated the change rather than reacted to it. Remember that the figure includes your screen and your input device, not only you.
Why is my phone slower than my laptop?
A touchscreen samples your finger at its own rate and does a certain amount of processing before the browser is told anything, and phone screens vary widely in refresh rate and pixel response. The difference you are seeing is largely the two devices. Compare your own results on one device rather than across them.
Why does pressing early cost me a round?
Because a test that quietly restarts after an early press rewards guessing, and guessing is the fastest strategy of all. A false start here spends the round, is listed in the table with how early it was, and is excluded from the timings, so the summary shows both how quick and how disciplined you were.
Should I look at the mean or the median?
The median. A single lapse of attention adds hundreds of milliseconds to the mean and moves the median hardly at all. The tool prints both plus the gap between them, which is a quick measure of how lopsided your rounds were, and a standard deviation for the spread.
Can this tell me if I am tired, concussed or safe to drive?
No, and it should not be used that way. Too much of every measurement is display refresh, input latency and browser scheduling, and a clinical test controls all of those. Treat it as a game that happens to be honest about its own error bars.
Is Reaction Time Test really free, with no limits?
Yes. There is no account, no daily cap, no file-size tier and no watermark, because there is no server cost to recover. The site is funded by clearly disclosed partner recommendations on the Partners page, never by metering the tools.
Are my files or text uploaded when I use Reaction Time Test?
No. Everything is processed by JavaScript running in your browser, on your device. You can verify it: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and use the tool. You will see no request carrying your data — because there is nowhere for it to go.
