Questions about EXIF Viewer
What is the most sensitive field?
GPS latitude and longitude. A photo taken at home and posted publicly can pinpoint your address to a few metres. Right behind it: the timestamp with time-zone offset, and the device serial number some cameras write.
Which formats carry EXIF?
JPEG and TIFF classically, plus PNG (via eXIf chunks), WebP and HEIC. Screenshots and images that went through a canvas usually have none.
Do social networks strip EXIF?
Most strip it on public display, but several keep it internally, and messaging apps vary. Assume nothing — strip it yourself before sharing with Remove EXIF.
Can it tell me whether a photo was edited or AI-generated?
Only as a hint. The Software field often names whatever last wrote the file, and some generators add a tag of their own, but every one of those fields can be stripped or forged, and an absent tag proves nothing. Metadata is a clue, never evidence.
Why does my screenshot show no EXIF at all?
Screenshots are written by the operating system, not a camera, so there is no lens, exposure or GPS to record. The same is true of anything exported through an editor or a canvas-based tool, including every image tool on this site.
Is EXIF Viewer really free, with no limits?
Yes. There is no account, no daily cap, no file-size tier and no watermark, because there is no server cost to recover. The site is funded by clearly disclosed partner recommendations on the Partners page, never by metering the tools.
Are my files or text uploaded when I use EXIF Viewer?
No. Everything is processed by JavaScript running in your browser, on your device. You can verify it: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and use the tool. You will see no request carrying your data — because there is nowhere for it to go.
