Questions about Retirement Calculator
Why does it show two different pot figures?
One is the number that will be on the statement and the other is what it will buy. At 2.5% inflation prices roughly double over thirty years, so a pot of a million then buys about what half of that buys now. Planning with the nominal figure is how people end up disappointed.
How much does the return assumption matter?
More than everything else on the page combined, which is why the table of alternative returns is shown rather than hidden. Two percentage points either way changes the pot by more than doubling your contributions would, because the difference compounds for decades. Plan against the lower rows.
Is a 4% withdrawal rate safe?
It is a rule of thumb drawn from historical American data over thirty-year retirements, not a guarantee. It says nothing about your own sequence of returns, and a poor first decade can empty a pot that the long-run average said was fine. Treat it as a starting point, not an answer.
Does it account for charges and tax?
No, and both matter. A fund charge comes straight off the return, so 7% with a 1% annual charge behaves like 6% here, and over forty years that single point takes about a quarter off a pot built from monthly contributions. Tax relief going in and tax due coming out depend on your country and account type.
Does my financial information leave the browser?
No. Every figure is calculated in the page itself and nothing is transmitted. Your last inputs are kept in this browser's local storage for convenience, and they clear with your normal browsing data.
Is Retirement Calculator really free, with no limits?
Yes. There is no account, no daily cap, no file-size tier and no watermark, because there is no server cost to recover. The site is funded by clearly disclosed partner recommendations on the Partners page, never by metering the tools.
Are my files or text uploaded when I use Retirement Calculator?
No. Everything is processed by JavaScript running in your browser, on your device. You can verify it: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab, and use the tool. You will see no request carrying your data — because there is nowhere for it to go.
